The Stein Egerta sculpture garden in Schaan is intimately connected
with the history of the State Art Collection of Liechtenstein and thus with Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.

The express aim of the state's art collecting activities since foundation of the State Art Collection in 1968 was to establish an international collection of sculpture. Before the Kunstmuseum opened in 2000, the sculptures set up around the country were an opportunity to showcase artworks from the collection to the public on a permanent basis.

In 1995, Georg Malin, then conservator of the State Art Collection, installed this public sculpture garden drawing on exhibits from the state collection in the garden of the Stein Egerta adult education centre. The sculptor Claus Bury was commissioned to create a site-specific sculpture for the occasion. Bury opted for the slope opposite the large flight of steps in the Stein Egerta garden, designing a sculptural counterpart with his sculpture entitled "Stufenschichtung". Works by Kurt Sigrist and Georg Malin are also on show. The piece by Ursula Näscher which was taken down for reasons of conservation was replaced by a radiant yellow stele by the Swiss artist Gottfried Honegger in 2002.

For the first time, the Bury, Honegger, Malin, Sigrist exhibition at the Stein Egerta centre now affords insights into the working processes of the sculptors on show in the sculpture garden. Among the exhibits are designs, drawings, models and small sculptures by Claus Bury, Gottfried Honegger, Georg Malin and Kurt Sigrist, each manifesting the particular artist's sculptural approach to finding form. Alongside Claus Bury's actual work, for example, we see watercolour sketches, working drawings, and a scale model of his contribution to the sculpture garden.

The occasion is the closure of the Kunstmuseum in Vaduz for conversion.During this period, Gasometer Triesen and Küefer Martis-Huus in Ruggell are presenting a number of excerpts from the Kunstmuseum's collection from different perspectives. The Stein Egerta villa was an opportunity to devote oneself to the sculpture garden in greater depth as an integral part of the collection, situated in the magnificent park of the adult education centre.
