Let them Eat Cake

by Zoë Gray

Zoë Gray is an independent curator, now based in Brussels, who has spent the past six years working as curator at Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. Since the election of the current coalition government in the Netherlands, there has been a sustained attack on contemporary art by both politicians and the press, with many claiming that art is little more than a left wing hobby. Speaking from her own experience of curating in an institution that is often labeled “elitist,” Zoë Gray makes an impassioned plea for ambitious programming in a time of an increasingly populist approach to culture.
