Eyes gaze out at the spectator from countless works of art: portraiture is perhaps still the most widespread form of visual art. Yet it is not only in portraiture that the gaze plays an important role for the artist. It can be part of the overall action within the painting, or it may be used as a device to address the gaze of the spectator who is looking at the art work. Indeed, even the absence of the gaze can be of inestimable importance. After all, the way the artist sees the world can also be the subject of the art work.
