By reversing principles and hierarchies, Imi Knoebel playfully emphasises the history of abstract painting.

The focus is on the question of all the things a picture can be. His interest in the image, both spatial and virtual, is manifested in the early work Projections on show. Working at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Knoebel tore the celluloid film of slides and projected the resulting line images onto the studio walls of room 19. Objects positioned in front of the projection warped the classical rectangle of the slides into expansive polygons. Based on this work he developed a large number of pieces which extended ordering principles and composition in a refreshing manner, reversing the reduction of painting into an overflowing, inexhaustible source of images. The joy of devising abstract images and the unfettered creation of forms remain a central core of his work. We are dedicating a solo exhibition to the artist, born in Dessau in 1940, with works from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the Hilti Art Foundation.
