In the art of the 1960s, considering the material played a key role with regard to creating the artwork.

In connection with the opening up of art into space and the associated "exit from the image", many artists investigated the expressive qualities inherent in the material, taking them to develop cogent new artworks. The range of materials included industrial steel, neon light, objets trouvés, and the human body. Language, too increasingly evolved into a "material" used to create visual artworks. The presentation showcases works by minimalist artists such as Richard Serra or Keith Sonnier along with the Nouveaux Réalistes (Arman, Jean Tinguely, Yves Klein) and a wide range of artists working in many different ways with language.
