For the first time ever, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is presenting an internatio-nal performance project in Liechtenstein.
Venue: keramik werkstatt schaedler AG, Nendeln

An unusual site of production, the keramik werkstatt schaedler AG in Nendeln, serves as the venue for the cycle of performances and dance, which will take place on three Saturdays at 5pm. The title Outside of Black Box and White Cube hints at what's to come, referring to a setting beyond the museum context as well as the notion of transcending boundaries. Outside of Black Box and White Cube shows current performative approaches that expand the traditional lines of demarcation between the artistic disciplines of performance, dance and theatre. Outside of Black Box and White Cube is a joint project of CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo and Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. The project represents the first time that Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein has obtained EFTA funding.

The cycle of performances, dance and theatre Outside of Black Box and White Cube presents current performative approaches. The selected examples expand and transcend the traditional boundaries not just of various disciplines, but also of the institutions dedicated to present these practices. In its early definitions, for example by James Austin and, later on, Judith Butler, Jacques Derrida or, more recently, Maurizio Lazzarato, the term performativity refers to the speech act, with language serving to perform or even construct identity. Moreover, in recent years, the concept of performativity has invaded the political terrain. For example, even the events protagonized by the physical and political bodies of citizens in the squares of a large part of the Mediterranean Arc have been described as performances, seen from the perspective of visual studies or in terms of analyzing the performativity underlying the occupation of these spaces. Hence, it appears important to rethink the contributions that contemporary artists are making to this practice. At the same time, it is necessary to rethink performativity and performance as an extension of the classic museum space. The programme selection therefore features a range of strategies that focus in particular on the concepts of performance and performativity in the sense of mediatizing emotions, signs and images, but also objects. Accordingly, not just human bodies, but also language and objects will perform. The artists' works draw upon the topics of the "acts of language", "political body", and the "performativity of things".

THE ACTS OF LANGUAGE Itziar Okariz

The actions of Itziar Okariz (b. 1965 in Spain) set various representation and communication devices in motion in an attempt to transgress them through the use of their very own conventions. A mimetic process that uses the de-contextualization of meanings, a change in the logical order, the inversion of roles between the observer and the observed as well as repetition. Trained in fine arts at the Spanish Universidad del País Vasco with a specialization in sculpture and painting, her current works focus on language and its evolution. Her most recent solo exhibition took place at the beginning of this year in León at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC). She is presenting a new work at Outside of Black Box and White Cube.

THE POLITICAL BODY Aimar Pérez Galí

Aimar Pérez Galí (b. 1982 in Spain) develops his work in the performative arts field as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, researcher and writer. Since 2011 he has been responsible for Espacio Práctico, a self-established space in Barcelona. The piece he is presenting at "Outside of Black Box and White Cube" is Sweating the Discourse (2013), in which he expresses theoretical concepts on the body as object of desire and machine, as well as the artist's task of finding an individual voice.
