Candida Höfer

For the exhibition Candida Höfer: Liechtenstein. In Dialogue with the Collections of Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the Hilti Art Foundation, in November 2021 the artist created a site-specific group of motifs in which she depicts scenes of public cultural life and architecture.
On a smaller scale, Candida Höfer also turned Passage Vaduz I 2021 and Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein Vaduz I 2021 from the group of works comprising twenty large-format photographs into editions.
As a subject, the goods lift like the passage embodies an element connecting two places, in this case the storage and exhibition spaces. Although visitors do not usually see the lift, it is nevertheless crucial for the museum’s day-to-day operations. Seen through the eyes of the photographer, its form now becomes an artwork in itself.
In her images, Höfer allows us to experience places and spaces afresh and to perceive them more consciously. At the same time, what is depicted bespeaks human presence and influence, even if most of the spaces that she captures are deserted.
A member of the Düsseldorf “Becher School”, the acclaimed artist has previously created a number of site-specific groups of images, for instance in Brussels or Düsseldorf. Her series created in and for Liechtenstein follows on in this tradition.

Candida Höfer (born 1945 in Eberswalde, Germany) lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
