Diamond Stingily

In her works Diamond Stingily often makes reference to the strong women in her family, taking personal memories and stories to focus on social conditions and aspects of Black identity. Forms of mourning rituals and the transmission of knowledge also play a central role in the work of the artist, poet and actor.

Stingily’s contribution to the C(to the power of)4 exhibition is a touching tribute to her mother, who passed away in 2021. Accompanying the presentation of her work in the show, this edition captures an important, emotionally charged place in her life.
In the mirror of the retro hair salon in Clay’s Beauty Salon (2022) we see a picture of a Black woman in a double pink frame. Her hair is straight and many straightening tools occupy most of the tabletop. The photo was taken in the salon of Stingily’s great-aunt, where she and her mother spent a lot of time. ‘My mother’s job was at her aunt’s (my Ainte Pearl) hair salon, Clay’s Beauty Salon, on the west side of Chicago’, the artist remarks. It is the last photo that Stingily took at her place of work before her mother’s death.

This edition is published to coincide with the C(to the power of)4 exhibition at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in 2022.

Diamond Stingily (born 1990 in Chicago, USA) lives and works in New York, USA.
